Thanksgiving

Life is full of change. The only thing constant in the universe is change. This Thanksgiving gave me pause to reflect on the many Thanksgivings that have come before. I’ve wondered what the future will bring. This is perhaps the last Thanksgiving I will share with my middle daughter and youngest son.

Last year my oldest, her husband and their son….my only grandbaby, came to share Thanksgiving with us. I didn’t know at the time that 2012 would see them transferred to Japan for three years service with the Marines. I miss them

This year my middle daughter will move into her own apartment. My son begins college in FL in April. With tight finances he might not make it home for some time.

That is the way life is supposed to progress. Children grow up and find their own lives. I hope I’ve done a good enough job raising them. I like the people my kids have become. School is still out on the youngest son. LOL. But he is only 18 and well, he’s got a bit more growing to do. College will be an eye opener for him I’m sure.

I miss my girlfriend Wolf. She couldn’t spend the day with us. We enjoyed her visit earlier in the week but she had obligations to return home for and couldn’t stay the holiday with us.

So dear ones. Live the moments one by one. Cherish your loved ones and hold them near. My thoughts for you to have a blessed thankful day. I find much to be thankful for each day. An attitude of gratitude is your choice.

“The Next Big Thing” – Blog Hop Tour

The Next Big Thing Blog Hop Tour.

Thank you Kharisma Rhayne for inviting me to participate in The Next Big Thing Blog Hop Tour.

The way this fun promotion works is last Monday Kharisma posted news about her NEXT BIG THING.

Today is my turn. Next Monday, five of my author friends will post promo’s about their NEXT BIG THING, and so on and so on. What a great concept right?

Next Monday check out: for their excerpts and answers to questions about their projects in the works.

For now take a look at my NEXT BIG THING, Dar’kind Promises released Feb 3, 2013 by Rebel Ink Press via all fine ebook vendors.

Ten Interview Questions for the “Next Big Thing”:

What is your working title of your book?

LOL: Working Title was “The Fairy and Cat Story” is the humble way “Dar’kind Promises” started out.

Where did the idea come from for the book?

I saw a beautiful graphic art piece by Anne Stokes and created my Dar’kind Fairy, Maura

and almost simultaneously I found a picture of these unusual wild cats, Caracal Cats. And Zelia’s character was born. However, my Tracker Shifter character has spots somewhat like a Clouded Leopard.

In her human form I see Zelia as this beautiful red haired woman.
What genre does your book fall under?

Erotic Paranormal Romance
Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Oh, that’s hard. I really have no idea!!

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

Can I cheat and say, from Zelia’s POV it would be:

“Zelia is willing to risk becoming trapped in feline form and even losing the love she’s found with Maura if it means she can save Maura from the evil hunting them.”

and from Maura’s POV it would be:

If they are unable to figure out how to gain control of Zelia’s shifting, all hope for success of their mission as well as any possibility of their future together is lost.
Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

I am a Rebel Ink Press Elite Author under exclusive contract with that publisher.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

I average a novel per year. This past year I’ve dedicated to writing novellettes.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

I’m not quite sure, Dar’kind Promises is unique. I don’t know that there is anything like it out there.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

My Editor Dawn asked me to try my hand at writing a F/F love story. Dar’kind Promises was the result.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

Zelia has another problem. Unfortunately, Zelia is experiencing unpredictable shifts between feline manifestion and her human one with some quite unexpected results.

Draft Blurb:

Dar’kind Fairy Maura comes to the human dimension on a search and rescue mission for one of her race. The success of the mission rests on her wits and the aid of her skilled feline tracker Zelia.

Unfortunately, Zelia is experiencing unpredictable shifts between feline manifestion and her human one with some quite unexpected results.

Worse yet, an ancient evil targets Maura in a bid for power and control of her magic.

Zelia is willing to risk becoming trapped in feline form and even losing the love she’s found with Maura if it means she can save Maura from the evil hunting them.

Maura searches for the strength to abandon the quest for her lost ‘sister’ if doing so will save Zelia’s life and stabilize her shifting abilities. Maura distracted by the sultry woman in her bed, struggles to stay focused on their quest. If they are unable to figure out how to gain control of Zelia’s shifting, all hope for success of their mission as well as any possibility of their future together is lost.

Happy Reading

My Guest Today – Michelle Miles

I started on a WIP a year ago named Phoenix Fire. Seriously people… there are only so many good titles in the cosmos and I have a horrible time creating titles. One WIP carries the title Haydn and Rhys story. I’m really going to have to find a name for it. Yet, I digress. LOL

Recently, I lifted the main character out of my WIP phoenix story put her in a completely different plot, wrote a completely different protagonist against her and created Phoenix Reborn. It is scheduled to publish in 2013 I give you that bit of back story to tell you how I met Michelle Miles. When I see the title Phoenix anything, my ears perk up and I take a look.

Michelle Miles

I stumbled across a promo for Michelle Miles new book Phoenix Fire.

Once I read the blurb I was excited about the story. What a great concept! and I had to add yet another book to my to be read pile. LOL. It is a VERY clever, interesting and hot.

I contacted Michelle and asked her to interview with me for my web today to promote her story “Phoenix Fire”.

Here is a picture of she and her son at The top of the McDonald Observatory while they were on Vacation in The Davis Mountains, West Texas

You have a beautiful family Michelle. Thank you for agreeing to visit my blog today. I feel like I’ve met a kindred friend.  I love your cover art.

1. Who is your favorite character in this book and why?

I love Elena. Elena is tough and hard as nails. She’s been through hell and all she wants is freedom and a life of peace. Readers will relate to her because she’s strong and strong-willed. She doesn’t fit into any mold. She believes in right and wrong and fights for it. She protects the weak. In Elena’s world, things are black and white; there are no shades of gray. Until Cassius comes along. 😉

2. What inspires you for your stories? Different things. I never know when a new idea is going to hit. Sometimes I dream them, other times there’s a particular subject I want to write about and research it until a story idea comes to me.
3. Tell us something no one else knows about you HMM. I don’t know what that would be! One of my guilty pleasures is watching Dancing with the Stars. I’m hooked.
4. What genre classification would you put on your book and what would you consider the heat level of the romance?

PHOENIX FIRE is a fantasy romance and I’d say that it’s sensual.

5. When did you start writing and what kicked off your passion to be an author? I dabbled in writing when I was in high school. I started writing for publications in 2001 and finally got published in 2006. I love telling stories and getting these characters our my head. It’s the ultimate dream job.BLURB:

Kill, or be killed.

Elena Gaius is Hixyl’s most heralded gladiatrix, catching the Emperor’s eye with her unspoiled beauty and fiery temper. Determined to let no man have her, he forces her into a life of unwanted accolades—for slaughter in the Games. With independence out of reach, Elena knows each day could be her last.

Cassius Antonius is a former general hired by an underground secret order to assassinate the Emperor. When he refuses, they take away the only thing precious to him—his freedom. Forced into servitude, he meets Elena and manipulates her into helping him, forming a shaky alliance and a searing romance.

The two become unwitting pawns in the struggle to save Hixyl from the Emperor’s tyranny. But plans spin out of control with the discovery of their secret tryst, and for their ultimate act of betrayal, the Emperor demands one last entertainment—to be pitted against each other in the Games in a fight to the death.

Marketing and Advertising for Authors

Wouldn’t that be a great title?  I think it is a book I would benefit from greatly! Especially if it had the real answers.

Do you remember when “everyone” said e-readers; nooks; kindles; reading aps for phones and computers were a passing thing that wouldn’t last. A phase that would pass.

The self publication industry didn’t get much better credit in the beginning.

The combination of the two emerging in a simultaneous synergy has caused vast potential for authors. That’s the good thing and in some ways that’s the bad thing.

I’m an author. My publications are available via e-book format. I have opportunity because of the advances in technology. With self publishing that opportunity extends to me and about a bazillion other people. I chose to not self publish and aligned myself with Rebel Ink Press. I made that decision for a host of reasons that deserve a different blog post.  Back to the concept of me and a gazillion bazillion other people.

Every writer I talk to lately is asking the same question regarding marketing and promotion.

HOW DO I REACH READERS?

and

WHAT WORKS?

I don’t have any answers. I haven’t found anyone that has answers.

Does social networking work? Face book pages…twitter….web and blog…google +, Linked, author pages on manic readers, amazon, goodreads.

What kind of promotions: Do you give away stuff to readers? drawings for gift cards, kindles?

Promotional swag? T-shirts, mugs, calendars, book marks, short blurb books in print?

And for those published via ebook format. How do you do a book signing at your local library like the conventional published paper authors?

I did find this cite and I think there may be a wealth of information there to explore. It’s called Marketing Tips for Authors

The titles of a few of their blogs are:

What you should know about book covers that your publisher may not know.

The importance of your personal brand

Mastering your marketing: leveraging social media

Five tips for marketing your book on twitter

I’d love to year your comments on the subject. What do you do? Have you found it effective? How can you tell it is effective?

The Poppy and Veterans Day

I never knew what the significance of the Poppy was with Veterans day. Oh, you’d see the ancient VFW members selling poppy flowers to raise funds but I never knew what it was all about.  Then I came across this poem

“In Flanders Fields the poppies blow, Between the crosses row by row.” The poppy was adopted as a symbol of the sacrifice of our veterans. Read an interesting article that describes how John McCrae wrote the poem on the Arlington Cemetery web site.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

In 1922 the practice of selling the poppies started based on this poem. Read this VFW article for interesting history about the poppy buddy sale.

Thank you to all our Veterans past, present and future. Thank you for the gift of freedom.

Slices of MY LIFE or That’s Why They Call IT A JOB

I had an experience last night that really moved me and I wanted to share it with you.

I work a night job in a warehouse environment. It is a different sort of work for me. I was in education and an academic setting until last November, 2011.

We work 4 days a week 10 hour shifts. That will increase to 50 and 60 hour shifts for the peak season between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

At the moment our company is hiring around 3000 temporary employees to get through the peak season. I’ve had the responsibility of training some of those new employees on the entire process of the work they are doing. That covers from how to be safe and not hurt themselves all the way through the process of doing their job effectively, efficiently and fast.  They need to be able to put a package on the line every 15 to 30 seconds depending on the size of the package.

Okay that’s all back story. Which I never start my books with (by the way) LOL.  You needed a frame of reference for this next part to make any sense.

So bottom line. Employees are on their feet for 10 hours working hard and fast. It is GRUELING work.

I have a girl whose feet hurt so bad by the end of the shift she is in tears. She continues to work, crying as she packs. She’s on her third day, third pair of shoes trying to find something she can tolerate. The last two days were shoes that weren’t wide enough for her foot. Her mom bought her new shoes to wear last night. Better but still by 4am she was miserable.

Another one of my trainees just found out she is pregnant. She’s running back and forth to the bathroom throwing up. She’s not going to make rate and will probably get laid off. Still, she’s not going to give up. She keeps trying to stick it out.

I have an older woman who can hardly walk by the end of the shift she’s in so much pain from standing for 10 hours while she works. She’s been in a sedentary job for some years, she’s my age. I know how much she hurts.

I have a younger kid who went home her first night. She was so exhausted she was throwing up. Now, at the end of her first week was working at 144%. She’s thrilled. She calls me over to look at her rate on the computer. I remark on how well she is doing.

I had another girl at the end of her first night passed out cold as a cod. She went down like a bucket of rocks. She hadn’t been drinking enough water and I believe she probably stood locking her knees which cut off the oxygen to her brain and she slam konked over. She hasn’t come back.

I had a trainee running to me tonight. Which elicited a “No Running” yell from me.  She called my name. “One of the girls is down in the bathroom and can’t get up.”

Oh dear gussy. I got to her and she says. “My knee just gave out and I fell down. Now I can’t get up.”  This girl is a “BIG” girl. emphasis on big.  It was her first night. The medics wheeled her out.

I was paired up with a co-trainer for this group of 18 recruits.  The first night all he did was hang out with the pretty girls and flirt with them.

We started the second night with me telling him “If you don’t carry your weight tonight, I’m gonna kick you in the ass.” My dominatrix side ordered him around for the next 10 hours, telling him what to do and when to do it to train and serve our recruits.

He told others in the break room that I “was being mean to him”. LOL

So sad, poor little willie. Big girl picking on him.

So that’s how it goes. We see things that scar our eyeballs. “OMG, a transgender blow up sex doll.  Amazing. ” or “Can you believe this guy is a best seller with a photography book about dogs underwater?”

I sit here with my own feet throbbing. Because those 18 new recruits have me walking back and forth between their stations all night long. I fix their machines, answer their questions, bring them boxes. I walk to the END of the pack line and pick up their mistakes to bring to them and show them how and why we can’t do things like this. I make them walk down to the end of the pack line to pick up their own mistakes when they realize they’ve made one.  They are so new they often don’t know they’ve made a mistake. Then, I’m walking back and forth to all of them to teach them more about their job. I’m walking back and forth to them to do safety audits on their behavior. And I’m walking back and forth…I think you get the point. I’m doing a whole lot of walking back and forth. Along with that I am talking with each and every one of them, explaining, problem solving. Talking until I am hoarse.

Basically I’m on MY feet for 10 hours and in constant motion. I walk for 10 solid hours with VERY little standing still.  The only time I get to stand still is when I’m filling out paperwork reports on their progress. I do that STANDING.

I’ll be taking a steaming hot shower when I wake up to turn around and do it all over again. I’ll be taking pain reliever BEFORE I start my shift so I can make it THROUGH my shift.

Then, when I leave the building I have guys come up to me asking “If I work really hard, do you think I’ll get to stay or do you think they will lay me off.”

People are desperate for a job.

Last year they started layoff’s even a couple of days before Christmas. Human Resources and security would come to your station and tell you to get your things and come with them. Security would take their badge and escort them from the building.

It’s harsh.

What will the future bring? I really don’t know what’s in store for me on the employment front. I know that I’m working for less than half the salary I had two years ago. I chose to leave that job for personal reasons and move to the mountains. I wasn’t able to find the same type of work here and ended up being one of those people wishing that they’s keep me if I worked really hard.

I’m still working very hard.

Benefit of Freedom

Whether your candidate is win, or lose. They had the right to campaign. Freedom to speak their thoughts and views. We had the freedom to discuss those perceived thoughts and views at length and at times quite heatedly.

The point is, we had the freedom to choose.  That’s something rare and special. I hope everyone took the time to exercise that freedom according to the dictates of their own thoughts.

Samhain Blessings

I’ve been doing research for some of my paranormals that feature magical aspects and spell work. I enjoyed learning more about Samhain, November 1st.

Halloween is a secular holiday and not the same as Samhain.

I always thought it was pronounced like on Supernatural, SAM-Hayne.  However, I have learned there are multiple pronunciations for the word and none of them are SAM-Hayne.  I prefer the galic Sau-win.

It is the end of the harvest season when the dark half of the year begins…winter. The Crone morns the death of the Lord of Summer.

It is the pagan new year’s eve. It is one of the principle pagan Sabbats of the year. Tonight is a night to reflect on our ancestors who have passed on.  The veil is very thin on this night. It is a time of contemplation, communication with the departed spirits and a renewal of our families and households.

Foods for this night are apples, rich stews, breads.

Cut an apple cross wise and you will see the pagan star, or pentagram. Interesting fact.

So, nite to all and blessings of Samhain upon you and yours.

Amethyst Desire Series continues with Beverly’s Secret

“Beverly’s Secret” is finished at 5,639 words and submitted to my editor at Rebel Ink Press. (Release date Mar/Apr 2013)  This short novellette is a follow along in the series “Amethyst Desire”. The first in the series, “Raynia’s Magic” a bit longer novellette debuted last Feb, 2012. What happens when a mysterious amethyst necklace enters the lives of people in this small town? Magic.

“Beverly’s Magic”

Draft Blurb:

F/F Erotic Contemporary Romance

Beverly Carter, clerk at Salynne’s Crystal’s and Thyme, could have sworn she placed the amethyst necklace in the display cabinet. How did the gem end up in her pocket? She’d have to take it back in the morning and explain her mistake to the shop owner.

Trying the necklace on for just a moment shouldn’t hurt anything. When the clasp won’t release she has to call on her next-door neighbor for help. A neighbor that Beverly hasn’t had the courage to approach. She’s pretty sure the woman is a lesbian, too. How to broach the subject without appearing a fool if she’s wrong? So, Beverly’s been stuck, just as stuck as the damn necklace.

Then Makala’s red lips were just too tempting, too perfect, too close. Kissing her first and asking second, “So do you play for the away team too? Ya wanna play on my field?” might have backfired. Yet, the way Makala accepted the kiss and returned it with unabashed enthusiasm answered all the questions left unasked.

Makala Reynaud certainly did want to play. They spent the night talking and having sex every way and everywhere possible in Makala’s small apartment. Beverly had to wonder if the rumors about the necklace were true. Was this some kind of magic that might only last the night? Or could this be the beginning of something magical with Makala?

“Raynia’s Magic” by Eden Glenn

Rebel Ink Press

Blurb:

Menage’ M/M/F & M/F/M Erotic Contemporary Romance.

Raynia Castellano is drawn to purchase an amethyst pendant as an impulse buy but not before the clerk assures Raynia the magic is in the woman, not the necklace that seems to call to her. And given Raynia has just left an adulterous ex-husband and has recently settled into a law practice with her oh so sexy and oh so apparently gay law partners, surely a little magic is required.

It was given a five star by Smart Girl’s Sci Fi, take a look:
