Exposition Blog Tour

Kyle Taylor is my guest today to promote Exposition. I agreed to be a hostess for this tour because this book sounded fascinating. I had the opportunity to ask Kyle some candid interview questions about writing this book. The answers gave me a peek into a gifted and interesting life. Thank you for being my guest today Kyle Taylor!

What interested you in writing M/M romance in a historic setting?

I had just watched The Age of Innocence, a luscious film by Martin Scorsese for the umpteenth time and I was thinking to myself how much I wished there was a sumptuous, gay epic film to enjoy.  Maurice certainly comes to mind, but I thought, what an excellent challenge to see if I could write a story in the vein of what I desired.

Tell us something behind the scenes from writing this story

The whole set up for Exposition started with a conversation I had with an elderly apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright.  I was writing a piece for an architectural magazine and we got to dishing outside the old archives annex at Taliesin West, Wright’s winter residence in Scottsdale. This man was a young apprentice in the late 1940’s to the end of Wright’s life in 1959.  In a gentlemanly and discrete sort of way, he revealed this hidden gay world of Wright’s apprentices during that time.  That stuck with me, these gay men and women who hid their sexuality – Wright was actually more accepting, but his last wife, Olgivanna was not.  That conversation stayed with me.

A year or two later, I was writing another article about the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago.  All of the early ‘starchitects’ had their hand in its design.  These top tier architects had some pretty interesting private lives!  Stanford White enjoyed entertaining underage showgirls in his secret penthouse at the top of the old Madison Square Gardens.  Louis Sullivan was rumored to have been a closeted homosexual.  Frank Lloyd Wright wound up having a sensational affair with a client’s wife and running off to Europe with her.  I thought, this is the perfect setting to explore the hidden lives of gay people in this bombastic Gilded Age in the midst of constructing the magnificent spectacle of a world’s fair.

Tell us about a scene in the book that moved you in some way and how.

There is a scene in the Exposition, where the hero, Benjamin Wyatt has tea in l’orangerie with the lovely debutante, Evelyn Van Buren.  The Wyatts and Van Burens so desperately want Benjamin to marry Evelyn.  Benjamin has already begun his affair with the dashing electrical engineer, Spencer Bowles. In the glass hot house, surrounded by lush greenery, Adam is presented to his Eve.  Benjamin tries his damndest to fall in love with Evelyn.  The shoe clearly doesn’t fit, but he fools himself to thinking it does.  I’ve had lovers and career choices where I’ve made the same mistake for sure.  It is painful to watch because Benjamin just fights internally forcing himself to make this thing work even when it isn’t who he really is.

Tell us something we wouldn’t guess about your characters, an interest, a hobby, some point from their life.

It is alluded to in the story off and on that Benjamin is an excellent horseman who loves to play polo.  I once worked at a Chicago country club that had Daniel Burnham as a member.  Daniel Burnham is Benjamin Wyatt’s boss.  Anyway, the club had an old polo field that was turned into a golf driving range by the time I worked there as a kid.  In my mind, I imagined when Benjamin was younger, he would spend his leisure hours on the back of a favorite horse playing polo at that club.

Here is a little trailer I made up for Exposition, just for the book tour.  I hope you enjoy it!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xvW01V732E

Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity.  I will be setting up a final giveaway for the tour for everyone – not only the $25. Amazon gift certificate, but I will also put my first novel, Billion Dollar Dreamer, on Amazon, free to download for the day for your readers to enjoy. Here is a trailer I made to show it off:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuWyCUp7YBs

Exposition by Kyle Taylor

Kyle Taylor is my guest today to promote Exposition an American Epic. Read through to the end…prizes, prizes.

I had to be a hostess because this book sounds fabulous! An interview with Kyle Taylor will post at 7a.m. What an interesting person behind the scenes as he answers some candid questions about writing and behind the scenes of the book.

Exposition

by Kyle Taylor

MEDIA KIT Exposition

BLURB:

Meet Benjamin Wyatt, a handsome young architect helping create the magnificent 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition.  While immersed in work at the famous architectural firm of Burnham and Root, Benjamin’s pugnacious, social climbing father, Walter Wyatt, pushes him to marry the stunningly beautiful debutante, Evelyn Van Buren—thus securing the family’s position in Chicago society.  Yet, when Benjamin meets the cocky young electrical engineer, Spencer Bowles, who is also working on the fair, his world and its ambitions are forever shattered.

Set amidst the opulent splendor of Chicago in the late Victorian Age, Benjamin Wyatt must confront the perils of accepting his own true love and risk destroying everything he worked so hard to achieve.  Meticulously researched and filled with lush images of the Gilded Age, Exposition, tells the epic story of a love that dare not speak its name…

EXCERPTS (Exclusive Excerpt):

There Benjamin stood, in the midst of the gayety of his wedding ball at the Auditorium. He looked up at the magnificent, gold-leafed arches above him, lit by more than three thousand lights which were dimmed to a surreal, majestic glow. He reminisced about the time when he watched Spencer Bowles tip toe out on the narrow catwalk, some ninety feet above the stage to adjust the lighting. It seemed like only yesterday, but was over two years ago.

“Mister Wyatt!” Louis Sullivan exclaimed as he walked up to Benjamin and shook his hand. Clearly, it pleased Sullivan to see his creation host such a spectacular event.

“Mister Sullivan!” Benjamin replied. “I was just admiring how wonderful your Auditorium looks tonight.”

“Why, thank you, Mister Wyatt, but the praise is all mine. Never before has a man had the good fortune to wed a creature of such beauty as Evelyn Van Buren! Well done, boy!” Sullivan smiled.

Ben wasn’t sure he had ever seen Sullivan this merry before. It cast his perfectionism in an entirely different light, but Benjamin was still uneasy around the man.

“Have you seen Mister Bowles?” Benjamin asked.

“The little monkey?” Sullivan laughed at himself. “Why, I thought you knew. He departed this morning for Paris. He shall be studying at your alma mater. That boy will be a fine architect some day!”

Benjamin was stung by Sullivan’s words. Spencer left Chicago! Benjamin was stunned.

“Well done, my boy!” Sullivan patted Ben’s shoulder and held onto it just a little longer while downing the glass of cognac he held. He then walked off.

The waltz grew louder as guests flooded onto the dance floor located on the main stage. Benjamin heard laughter and the clinking of glasses; chairs slid across the makeshift wood floor as guests made way to dance.

From a distance, he could saw his mother and father standing alongside Amistad and Florence Van Buren. Each had their own elated smiles on their faces, none wider than Walter Wyatt’s. With a cigar in one hand, he grandly gestured, no doubt telling his time-worn stories of the adventures of his youth.

Benjamin Wyatt looked up again at the vast, golden arches of the auditorium, transformed into a fantastical golden night sky by their delicate electric bulbs. He felt completely alone.

Friday, Friday

It’s Friday. Wheee! Love Friday’s.

I haven’t given a life update lately, so today we catch up on all the real things that I’ve embraced lately.

I’m centered in a little town outside Asheville, NC now. I love it. Every season has some beautiful scenic eye candy. Our home is a lovely craftsman cottage, hard wood floors throughout. Open floor plan flowing from the livingroom (with fireplace) through the kitchen.

The upper 2nd floor has a bedroom for guests and a loft bedroom that we turned into a craft room library. The main floor has the Living room, dining room, kitchen (with a mudroom leading to the back deck), den (also leading to the back deck), and a small anteroom that opens to the bedroom, bath, and another bedroom. That second bedroom is our shared office space and a small twin bed for company.

The basement is as big as the footprint of the house and provides workspace for a shop with painting, sanding and assembly centers, a motorcycle area, gardening area, and a bit of storage.

20130814_143231

Gardens blooming every season except winter…viewed from every window in the house. Japanese Maples, butterfly bushes, cala lillies, day lillies, iris, ivy, hydrangea, fire bushes, dwarf fir tree, and a list of flowers/plants that I don’t recognize, can’t spell yet produce fantastic colors and blooms. The former male owner was a landscaper for many years. This summer there was probably a million butterflies fluttering in a converge all over the butterfly bushes. My goal is to add more plants to complete the entire habitat for the butterfly life cycle.  We even had several hummingbirds hang around the place. It was only the second time I’ve ever seen a hummingbird.

20130809_130512

I was able to bring in cut flowers arranged in Great Grandma’s cut glass crystal vases, spring, summer and into the fall.

20130701_152739

20130829_115956

20130813_141308

We’ve done quite a bit of remodeling. Nothing was necessary of course but there were little touches we wanted to make. First was a bit of painting. ;-).  The previous owner had painted one wall in the den plaid.

Now I love a scottish brogue as much as the next. I’ve spent fantasy time wanting the kilt on that bonnie lad to blow up just a wee bit more on a breezy day. LOL.  However, She PAINTED the WALL PLAID!!! Just had to go.  So, we took a cool taupe sweater to the local hardware store and matched the paint color to create a cool natural color for the den. One wall is a deep dark plum color for accent and that color continues into the kitchen for accent as well. Additionally one wall in the Living room needed to have the cool taupe so it would match our new Georgia O’Keefe print.

20130921_192209

Then there was the infamous wolf shrine on the anteroom wall and door leading to the basement. Yes, I said WOLF shrine. It was a little creapy.  Yet, as we were painting I had painful sorrow. We were painting over something that another woman had invested much love, painstaking effort…something she cherished. It was sad but change is inevitable.

Wolf Murel on Garage Door

Our first major construction project was to take the wall on the back side of the den that supported double windows and have french doors installed.

Back wall of den

Oh what a difference to open up this small room.  The den is basically the TV room. A loveseat and a small recliner are about the only furniture that it will support. There is a doorway to the anteroom that has a shelf unit with movies and music. So that’s one doorway. There is a door to the upper floor and a doorway to the kitchen. Then the french doors out. A plant shelf on the one big wall.  So it is a cozy space without much wall realestate.

The french doors open out onto the back deck. Which in and of itself is fairly large. However, it had an asymmetrical shape. And with the installation of the outward opening doors we lost about three foot of useful deck space. So the next project was to take the deck out another six feet. Square it up into a continuous rectangle shape. And on one end create a platform with extra reinforcement under it to support the hot tub. Yes, within the next several months we will be re-locating the hot tub back from friends.

20131110_130610

The kitchen was a red, grey, green distressed black hole. So considerable painting happened in there. The whole thing is now an ultra white with the arch wall looking into the dinning room a deep, dark, rich plum for accent. We kept the hand painted checkered floor. New knobs topped it off for a clean new look. We also had a non-working dumb waiter from the basement taken out to make room for a pantry cabinet.

Kitchen

My alter ego J.R. Lowe has been narrating. That’s been a whole mess in technology. I could spend hours telling you about all the stuff that has gone wrong, but suffice it to say that J.R. Lowe’s narrating business is continuing to grow and gain strength. I think the next phase will involve a refrigerator box in the basement with foam sound proofing to make an audio studio. LOL.

While all of this remodeling and unpacking, house organizing has been going on we’ve continued to embrace the cultural adventures available in this part of the world. We’ve attended fall craft fairs, art shows, judged craft beers at the Blue Ridge Brew off. I’ve attended scholarly conferences, writing workshops, library conventions, Dragon CON, dances, county fairs, The National Gingerbread contest, found waterfalls, biked all over the place and visited with Elk out on the Cherokee Reservation. I’ve spent a month sick with the after Dragon CON crude, Had a motorcycle skid out that left me painful and unable to do heavy work for some time. Seen amazing things, done wonderful things, had so much fun.

All of this has caused me to work hard to finding balance of the professional, social, personal worlds. I have received wonderful beautiful heart warming comments from readers on some of my work out there. I am happy and at peace in all dimensions of my life.

Cat, Pony, Dog and I have all found our happy home.

20130814_14290620130719_132353

20130814_142422

So, what’s on the agenda. I’m working through the final edits on a M/F/M menage’ paranormal story. Yes, with wolf shapeshifters. Wonder what inspired that. LOL. And the next work is a F/F contemporary centered around New Years Eve and being open to the change the fates have in store for use. Humm another inspiration from life?

Stay tuned and once again… Thank you all for a very happy and wonderful year. I look forward to more stories that will make you tingle, feel the awe of true love and smile for lovers finding their happily ever after.

With his bone-melting good looks and seductive voice, he knocks Jessie’s defenses down one by one and awakens the sensuous woman she’s hidden beneath her uniform. But Jessie can’t afford to be soft. Or allow herself to fall for a cowboy who’s never in one town longer than it takes to ride a bull.

Kyle never backs down from a challenge, but after a passionate night with Jessie, he realizes there’s a hell of a woman behind the handcuffs and badge. Can Kyle convince Jessie he can take her for more than an eight-second ride?

Eight Second Ride (Excerpt)

Kyle Mitchell wanted to pry his eyes open but someone was pounding a drum inside his head so hard he was afraid to see daylight. Not only that, but whatever he was lying on was harder than a concrete floor and killing his back. He needed aspirin and coffee in large supply. He tried to raise his hands to press them against his aching temples but something jerked his right hand and prevented him from lifting it. Now he opened his eyes. And wished he hadn’t.

Unfortunately this wasn’t the first jail cell he’d been in, but he was pretty sure it was the worst. And he was pretty sure it hadn’t been modernized in the last fifty years. One wall consisted of the usual arrangement of bars with a portion of it hinged for a door. The sleeping arrangement, rather than a crummy cot that would have been a vast improvement, was a flat piece of wood with a mattress on it so thin he was sure he’d be able to see through it. And it was the kind that pulled down from the wall on chains.

And speaking of chain, he yanked at his right hand again and discovered he was handcuffed to one length of chain.

Damn! What the hell had happened? What had he gotten himself into now?

Squinting against the brightness of the light from the ceiling lights he looked down the length of his body.

Boots. Check.

Jeans. Check.

He clapped his left hand over his waist in a sudden panic.

Champion belt buckle! Okay! Check.

Shirt. Check.

He rubbed a hand over his square jaw, feeling the stubble of yesterday’s beard growth. Testing everywhere on his face he discovered his nose was tender but not broken, but the rest of his face felt as if a bull had stomped on it.

Wait. Was that what had happened? The last thing he remembered was lasting the full eight seconds on Sodbuster before landing in the dirt of the rodeo arena. Everything else was a blur.

“Well. It looks like you’re finally awake.”

The voice was pure music, soft, with a faint drawl. Squinting through the bars he thought for a minute his heart was going to stop beating. In the hallway looking in at him was about five-foot-four of the most breathtaking woman he’d ever seen. Dark blonde curls tumbled down to her shoulders, framing a lightly tanned face with emerald green eyes peeking out from thick, thick lashes. The stiff fabric of the uniform shirt she wore couldn’t conceal the lush ripeness of her breasts any more than the pants hid her mouthwatering curves.

But what really shook him up was the star gleaming from its place of prominence on her shirt, right over one of those nicely rounded breasts.

Holy hell! This was the sheriff?

He looked at her and something inside turned over. He had an urgent need to see this woman naked in his bed, but not the way he did with the usual women he rolled in the sheets with. Not an eight-second ride and done. No, even in his pitiful condition he could imagine making slow, soul-searing love to her. Everything from his balls to his brain went on instant alert.

Athena is a widow and an accomplished businesswoman. She’s the type of person who exceeds expectations in business, family–life in general. Since the death of her husband, she’s had a desire to explore submissive cravings she’s had for some time. The hitch is, Athena is known as a Mistress, because that’s the role she played to her husband.

Though she knew her submissive nature was strong enough to serve her husband as a Domme, because that’s what he needed, it’s when she meets Dale, a retired Navy SEAL, that she attempts to discover what her own submissive desires are. But letting go of that control is harder than she expected.

Fortunately, Dale is an accomplished Master who can help her accept the true nature of her submission, rather than how she’s tailored it to meet the expectations of others. But in the course of learning what letting go means, both of them will learn a bit more about the nature of love between Dominant and submissive, and how it defies all categories.
