Career Exploration – Narrator

One of my writer friends has a second career as a narrator. I thought it was a very interesting career. We are always looking for unique careers for our characters where they are semi-self employed and able to control their own schedules. Of course so they have time to play with there love interest between the pages of our books.  Kellie Kamryn was gracious enough to answer some questions for me about her career.

How did you get into this type of work?
Romance Divine published a book of my poetry and he asked me if I wanted to go into print and audio as well as ebook. I said yes, and then he asked me if I would record my own work because I would know where to put in the correct inflection, etc. I thought it was a good opportunity to do try something I’ve never done. He thought I did such a good job on it, that he asked me to record another story I had published with Romance Divine. Then other authors heard my work and requested me to record samples of their books and now I narrate for quite a few Romance Divine authors. I also started working for The Killion Group as a narrator, helping authors with the audio rights to their books, get their books into audio.
Take a moment to describe the business process of narrating. For example Are you private contracted for each title you narrate?
Yes, I’m contracted for each title I narrate.  Does you company have your voice on file to offer to prospective clients who want their book narrated? I do one free short sample to authors to see if my voice fits the vision they have for their book. You do this in your own home studio and send the files in. etc? I have my own recording equipment and software, and send the files back to the companies I work for, for upload. How does the business part of the process works? Living in Canada, I’m fortunate to work for these companies directly. For example, I cannot narrate for ACX which is the largest audiobook distributor because I’m not a US citizen. They assured me they are working on it! LOL, However, I have a lot of work with these two companies, so I’m not worried.
What is the hardest thing about your work as a narrator? Speaking slowly and evenly throughout a piece. As a narrator, you cannot rush through a work even though you’d like to finish by a certain deadline. I hope this is something author’s understand especially when their book isn’t done as quick as they’d like. An 80,000-100,000 word piece takes a long time to record! When I make a mistake, I have to pause, go back, and re-record. The software I use makes it so easy to do that, but it still takes time. I also require authors to provide pronunciation of characters and places, especially if it’s a paranormal or historical – just because it’s obvious to the writer, it isn’t always to me. Sometimes author’s want a certain accent which can be difficult. I study up on them and would like to take voice coaching when I have time and money. Usually, I’ll study it, practice it, and give the author a sample. Then I have to “stay in character” and not work on any other audio until a book is done so I don’t lose the accent for that particular character.
What is the most fun? I get paid to read!! I think that is the most amazing thing. I love to read, always have, and it’s great to read all these fantastic stories, bring them to life, and be introduced to new authors on a regular basis.
So, lets see. There is a lot to this narration work and you are a write too. You mentioned how you have to really ‘get in character’ for the piece you are narrating. How do you balance your narration work with your own writing? Do you have different times of the day etc that separate your focus on the two? I do a lot more narrating than writing these days. Narrating is paying my bills more than writing. I’m hoping it will all spill over into the other as the books I write and the ones I narrate are sold on the same sites. My hope is that people might want to check out my other work if they hear my audio work or vice versa.
Okay, so How much time do you estimate you put into a narration project for say an 80,000 novel. A 120,000K novel is approx. 30+ hours of recording time. I did that one in about a week. Shorter projects take less time. You have research and prep time. Research is talking to the author a bit to make sure we’re on the same page with what they want to see. Then I just read. Contracts are drawn up for the author to sign so that I don’t work on an entire project and then they reject it. That’s not my department, tho! Then the actual narration. Then you do your own editing on the piece? With each company I work for, I do my own editing and quality control check. Then I send them on for upload. After they leave my hands, it’s not up to me anymore. Does the contract give you specific deadlines? Right now, no. I’m given a project and I work on it when I can. All the authors know I have more than one in my queue at any given time.
Perhaps readers would gain a better understanding if you gave us a brief thumbnail sketch on what one of your typical day’s is like.  Get kids off to school, social media/emails/promotion/, then I either write or record for the day. Recording can be taxing on the voice, so I drink plenty of water or herbal tea and write in between if I feel like I need a break. Then my kids come home from school and it’s all about them until bedtime. Sometimes if I’m not exhausted I’ll join a few fellow writers for a writing sprint before I head to bed, LOL
Kellie Kamryn is also a talented author. What are you working on now Kellie?

Dar’kind Promises – Secret Twenty-Six

The superiority of the Fae People.

“The race of Fae were created to hold the world in balance. They are the peace givers bringing love and harmony to all they touch. Happiness springs forth from the magic of the Fae. Grace and beauty exude from the paths of the Dar’kind.” It goes on for some paragraphs about the mission of the Fae. It stops just short of saying they belch flowers and fart rainbows.

“The Dragon folk are a beast to serve the needs of the Fae when services are required for security and protection against less enlightened races.” That would indicate  in the delicate Fae way, that they feel the Dragon peoples are nothing more than hired thugs.

“The Tracker folk are amusing in their superstitions, yet possess useful skill in finding things that have been misplaced.” Another indication that everyone bows to the Fae race. Taken from the pages of the Dar’kind Fairy Codex of Indications.

To arrive at the place where the Fae and Tracker people work in a cooperative venture with equality like Maura and Zelia have on this mission indicates a massive political negotiation on both sides. Pride can be a terrible enemy to true understanding. This history also helps us understand why Zelia is horrified that her hormones are indicating Maura is her destined mate. It might also give us insight into why Maura grieves for the poor beast trapped by The Chosen without real indication of it’s humanity.

Dar’kind Promises – Secret Twenty-Five

So, my dear readers. By now you’ve gathered the tie in between all my worlds. The pivot point being Salynne’s Crystals and Thyme, the small rural town in North Florida and key characters interacting and crossing through each other’s stories.

Dar’kind Promises is paranormal and the ones to follow it on a quarterly schedule will be paranormal.

Raynia’s Magic is contemporary. Oh the hint of paranormal is teased with the potential of the necklace having magical properties. However, it is rather a hokey pokey dance of Does it…Doesn’t it? Raynia’s Magic has become vol 1 of the Amethyst Desire Collection. Future stories in that collection will all involve the amethyst necklace and cameo the stories of the lovers who interact with the necklace. Those stories will publish about every other month. Some of them are paranormal and some are contemporary. Obviously Raynia’s Magic is Contemporary. Beverly’s Secret vol 2 is also contemporary. However, vol 3 Phoenix Reborn is paranormal. There are hints in the titles of the story that reveal to readers the underlying nature of the book whether paranormal or contemporary.

Will Maura and Zelia appear again in a future story? Now that is a good question. I don’t know the answer to that one. I think it will depend on the readers. Maybe Maura and Zelia will appear again in Ardith’s rescue. Perhaps you will see the two of them in their home environment on the other side of the veil. Who knows? LOL What would you like to see?

Dar’kind Promises – Secret Twenty-Four

What is my writing/business routine and do I write every day.

It is really hard for me to write on some of my work days. I work nights from 6:30 pm until 5:00 am, ten hour shifts in a really physical kind of occupation.

Some days I am just too tired to write. I come home catch up on face book, email, blog posts that I need to write, edit or promote, setting up or responding to blog tours or other promotions for upcoming releases. Sometimes I can write. I will usually stay up until about 8am and then go to bed to rise in the afternoon. Once I am up I do a quick email check and get ready for work, shower, prepare lunch and leave all over again.

I work four, ten hour shifts a week and have three days off unless a mandatory over time day is called.  On my days off I end up awake all night and sleeping in the day just like my work days. I can’t really shift back and forth. So I’m like a freaking vampire.

On my days off/ nights off. I write and edit.  I have three or four pieces I am working on at a time. The piece that is with my editor and might come in with a revision letter from her. Second is the piece that I am almost finished with and doing final edits on. The third piece I am in the revision/edit stage that follows a draft of the work. I am working it and writing it. The process that takes me to the final edits stage. The fourth piece is the work that I am writing as a rough draft. It is the first run through of putting words on paper for the first time to get the characters and story down. Some of this process can carry over onto my work days where I will edit a bit or write a bit on one piece or another.

Along this way I send pages to my Critique Partner as I need her advice or help. At the beginning of a project I will often talk with her and brainstorm the plot, character or story line with her for realism and plausibility. At the beginning of each project I organize my thoughts into a blurb draft to send to my editor as a query to see if they are interested in the story. If they are, they give me the go ahead to write the story for submission. If they like what I send they contract it with me, set release date, send it through their revision / editing process with my editor. I complete a contact sheet about the story to get Carl Franklin the graphic artist on board for the cover design.

Once I know the release date I work to organize blog hop tours, radio shows, and any publicity I can generate to get the word out to readers. The Rebel Elite Authors periodically do advertisement and publicity together in various magazines and on different websites. Rebel Ink Press promotes my work on their website and they handle all the release business with the e-vendors.

When I totally finish a rough draft I set it aside for a week before I start the phase two editing and revision. I do this at each step of the process. Once I completely finish the final. I set it aside a couple weeks then go through it one more time or two before I send it to the editor.

Every author is different. However, this system works for me. I like routines and knowing what to expect. It helps me be more productive. You might say this is the secret to my success. LOL

Dar’kind Promises – Secret Twenty-Three

Recessives and Pleasure Slaves.

In the world of WyrmArach there are Dragon shifters in the warrior class and there are Humans that can shift to dragon, the ruling class. Of the human to dragon faction, there are some who are unable to shift to dragon form at puberty. They are labeled recessive and given to the warrior class as pleasure slaves to serve their every need. It can range from housekeeping to satisfaction of personal needs i.e. pleasure slaves.

As recessives have no value other than the services they can provide their owners. There are specific customs assigned to proof of ownership, transfer of ownership. Slaves are pierced and fitted with fettish chains of the house that owns them.

The Watchers on the human side of the veil run an intricate underground railroad to attempt to rescue those that they can in a judicious manner to avoid detection.

The culture of Pleasure Slaves will be revealed more in Dragon’s Soul – Isobeau and Kiernan’s story.

Maura says this about pleasure slaves in Dar’kind Promises:

She needed fucked and the fates put a naked whore on her doorstep. Some trick turned bad probably put the woman out of one of the other rooms. Back home, a person had to take ownership of their sex slaves instead of this random free agent shit, another plus for her culture, over this Goddessless place. The practice of recycling the useless recessives and giving them purpose and a useful place, win/win.

It hints that the use of pleasure slaves is well accepted even in the Dar’kind Fae society.

Beverly Carter, clerk at Salynne’s Crystal’s and Thyme could have sworn she placed the amethyst necklace in the display cabinet. How did the gem end up in her pocket? She’d have to take it back to work in the morning and explain her mistake to the shop owner.

Trying the necklace on for just a moment couldn’t hurt anything. When the clasp won’t release she has to call on her next-door neighbor, Makala Reynaud for help. A woman that Beverly is very attracted to but hasn’t had the courage to approach. She hasn’t figured out how to confess her interest without outing herself prematurely. Bev’s pretty sure the woman is a lesbian too. What if she was wrong? So Beverly’s been stuck, just as stuck as the damn necklace.

Then, Makala’s red lips were just too tempting, too perfect, too close. Stealing a kiss could open a door to disaster instead of the closet on her sexual preference. Yet, the way Makala accepted the kiss and returned it with unabashed enthusiasm blew that door off its hinges.

They spent the night talking and exploring sex every way and everywhere possible in Makala’s small apartment. Beverly had to wonder if the rumors about the necklace were true. Was this some kind of spell that might only last the night?  Could this be the beginning of something magical?

Vol 1 Raynia’s Magic – Released 2/2012

Raynia Castellano is drawn to purchase an amethyst pendant as an impulse    buy but not before the clerk assures Raynia the magic is in the woman, not the necklace that seems to call to her. And given Raynia has just left an adulterous ex-husband and has recently settled into a law practice with her oh so sexy and oh so apparently gay law partners, surely a little magic is required.

Dar’kind Promises – Secret Twenty-two

The Time Table. The events of Dar’kind Promises happen within a couple of days of each other.  Several stories are meshed together and I thought you might be interested in how the stories fit together within a time line.

Isobeau has been watching and protecting the Dragon Guardian. (future W/T Dragon’s Mark)

Maura finds the Indigo Dragon and sets a spelled portal for someone of his kind to find him.

Zeila and Maura find refuge at Isobeau’s home. We meet Rhys and Haydn (future w/t) Dragon’s Unbound.

Maura and Zelia reveal information to Isobeau about the villian the morning of their rescue, right before Isobeau calls Wren to check on her after her date from the previous night.

Wren’s story begins. It is fall before Samhain. (W/T Dragon’s Mark)

Day 1 of Wren’s story in (W/T) Dragon’s Mark – Raynia Castellano of Raynia’s Magic purchases something from Salynne’s Crystals and Thyme while Caleb is acting as clerk and Ethan is outside the shop working on a carpentry project. Wren is outside talking to Ethan.

Day 2 of Dragon’s Mark – Kiernan is rescued. That evening Dragon’s Unbound begins with Rhys and Haydn

(W/T) Dragon’s Soul events occur.

The following Spring – Beverly’s Secret takes place

Dar’kind Promises – Secret Twenty-one

The Watchers. A real secret society.

The Watchers arose from recessive dragon shifters. They have no dragon form causing them to be rejected by their own people. These few have escaped Wyrmarach for the Earth Dimension. They’ve formed a tenuous alliance with the Dragon Enforcers to keep the veil intact against dragon shifters escaping to Earth. When you are trying to keep a race secret it is not wise to have dragons the size of buses flying over head. They’ve occupied themselves with orchestrating a secret underground railroad to aid in the escape of other recessives from the oppression of the Queen.

The royal princes have been cast out of their world by their queen mother because they are considered freaks. Their transformation is said to be an abomination. They police the veil, independent of the Watchers. It is an uneasy alliance at best. They hunt any rogue dragons that mange to slip through to the Earth Dimension.

For generations the Watchers have “Watched”. They’ve observed for so long most have forgotten what they’ve really watched and waited for. Only a few know they wait for the rise of The Dragon Guardian.

Dar’kind Promises – Secret Twenty

Isobeau is featured as the confidant. She is The Healer. She will help Maura and Zelia in Dar’kind Promises. She has been the protector for Wren in (W/T) Dragon’s Mark. She will be Kiernan’s Love in (W/T) Dragon’s Soul. She is a significant character who will later lead to the discovery of Ardith in Dragon’s Soul.

Her voice is described this way: “Izzy’s voice made you feel good all over. She explained her warn and unusual accent as a combination of native tribal mother and Scottish father.” by Wren. She has long dark hair that falls in waves around her shoulders and back. She has a certain gypsy quality of mystery and freedom.

She is one of the Dragon race and sister to the Royal Twins, Ethan and Caleb. Not many people know that. Isobeau holds her own secret as well.  She has been labeled a recessive. That’s how she was accepted into the Watchers. Her recessive trait is also why when she is taken back to WyrmArach she is sentenced to be given as a pleasure slave. What they don’t know is Isobeau can transform. Like her brothers her transformation is unique and so unusual it must remain hidden forever rather than reveal the abomination she is. Some call her a witch. Some call her a freak.

Writers Words of Wisdom = Words For The Day

262216_205082009621980_1520916776_n

Here is a little fun with Webster today. We use these words but do we really know what they mean.

Eviscerate – 1. To take out the entrails of – Disembowel 2.To deprive of vital content or force

Betrayal – Betray – 1. To lead astray 2 To fail or desert, especially in time of need

Trust –  assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something 2. Dependence on something future or contingent

Soul Mate = a person who is perfectly suited to another in temperament
We like to write villains who are sociopathic. Lets explore a little.
Sociopath. It is within the category of Antisocial personality disorder (aspd) It is described by the American Psychiatric association in the DSM-IV-TR as “a pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others….”
Very nice article on the difference between a sociopath and a psychopath can be found here: http://voices.yahoo.com/sociopath-vs-psychopath-there-difference-1906224.html. Here is another good cite: http://www.mcafee.cc/Bin/sb.html
Some of the key elements of a sociopath:
Superficial charm, manipulative and conning, pathological lying (They can even get caught up in a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing.),
Lack of remorse, the end justifies the means and let nothing stand in their way.
Ahhh Shallow emotions. When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Simply, they are not genuine and neither are their promises.
Incpapcity for love. Callousness and lack of empathy, a complete disregard for others feelings. “People with this disorder appear to be charming at times, and make relationships, but to them, these are relationships in name only. They are ended whenever necessary or when it suits them, and the relationships are without depth or meaning, including marriages.”
Irresponsibility and unreliability. Never a concern about wrecking others lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves. Puts it off in an excuse or lies to cover any responsibility. I love you but I was not IN love with you. for example.
Lack of realistic life plan/parasitic lifestyle. Tends to make all encompassing promises for the future but unfortunately exploits others quite effectively.
So use this to think about some of the words we use and spice it up a bit.  Create that villian who readers can really hate!
