“Shifter’s Legacy” Coming this Spring from Rebel Ink Press

Addison has hopes and dreams. There are so many things that worry her. Cares she carries on her shoulders. She has fantasies too. Through it all she adores her husband Nathan and son Logan.

Her life is going to spin around when her husband turns one of those secret fantasies into reality and proposes to invite Duncan into their relationship.

Draft Excerpt

“Addison Barnes thrust the Jeep’s transmission lever into park with a ruthless shove. Damn Jeep. Damn fence. Damn wolves. Damn Nathan. She hated dealing with neighbors at dawn over a broken fence. Thank God none of the wolves had gotten out. The Jeep had required a jump to start in order to get into town. Right now the freakin Rescue was the least of her problems. Logan hadn’t been restless which meant she didn’t sleep either.  She’d put up with the pack stomping around her house till all hours last night, with their ‘I’m a werewolf shifter.’ Oh so holier than thou lowly human attitudes. Then, Nathan’s irascible temper like he was P.M.S.ing at whatever they were grousing and complaining about. Half she’d not understood and half she’d ignored. She was sick of taking that damn high road.”

Shifter’s Legacy a Character Reveal for Wolf Moon

In Shifter’s Legacy, we get a visit from Makala and Beverly, “Beverly’s Secret”. They are wrangled into baby sitting Baby Logan to allow Nathan and Addison their weekend romantic getaway. Only Nathan knows about Duncan’s invitation to the party. Fireworks ensue on that regard. But back on task.

Draft Excerpt:

“Makala tried to ignore the shrill ring of the phone. The sound screamed at her in counter rhythm with the Oh Shit internal litany pounding at her temples.

Beverly held the ringing phone out to her. “Makala! The phone is ringing again. It’s Nathan. You can’t keep ignoring his calls. It’s the first time they’ve left Logan overnight. They’re bound to worry.”

Makala shook her head. No way she could talk to him. It was up to Bev. She answered, “Hi Nathan” -a little too bright. Makala couldn’t hear his side of the conversation and wasn’t sure she wanted to.

Bev responded. “Yes, yes everything is fine here. We’ve been playing with Logan. He’s such a little animal… “She paused, listening. “Hmm, oh yes, having fun. You wouldn’t know him… Sure, sure everything is fine here. You two don’t give it a thought. Enjoy your weekend. Bye now.” Bev disconnected the call and walked over to where Makala was standing to join her in staring at the evidence of the little white lie.”

Challenges of Edits “Shifter’s Legacy”

I’m living in edit Hell. Most writers know where I am. They may even be here too. However, one is always alone in edit hell.  Well wishers try to assist, but it is a solitary place that’s almost impossible to get out of with help. These decisions are mine and mine alone.

These lovely concepts are ones I’m grappling with today.

What would werewolves argue about in a pack meeting?

What really is vivacious? How would you describe it through action. How would someone act that is vivacious and the reader get vivacious?

In the pursuit of good, better, great, AWESOME FANTASTIC THE ANGELS ARE SINGING…the first answer isn’t always the best answer. And so I ponder and think and ponder. That perplexed face staring at the computer screen really is me working.

I am dealing with the buzz of was, was, was and the ringing tingle of ly, ly, ly.

Tweaking words to stronger choices, clearer choices. Saying more, saying less. Oh it does make my wee head spin.

Wolf Moon – A Reveal of “Shifter’s Legacy”

Nathan Barnes has a journey. He’s working hard to assemble all the wolf shifters he can find in the small rural area. Some days it is much like hearding cats.

“He counted silently to ten while he composed his thoughts into the response his pack needed. Leaders led, which didn’t mean explaining every decision. What it did mean was seeing to the needs of his pack. Tempers continued to flare around the living room of the modest farmhouse, headquarters of the Chinsequet Wolf Rescue.”

Photo : Clkr.com

Nathan is learning to be a leader and he is going to make mistakes along the way. Quinten has always pushed to be the pack’s second in command. Most days he’s there waiting for Nathan to fail so he can take control of the pack.

Nathan is a new father. His son Logan is about nine months old. He’s a good father and finds himself torn. His wife fears the day their baby might exercise his genetics and shift. Yet, Nathan longs for that day as proof. It will mean continuation of their subspecies. Proof that shifters can breed with humans without it meaning extinction.

What a Joyous, Appreciate A Dragon Day

I appreciate dragons. I really do. I would venture to say I LOVE dragons. I have a wall shelf of dragon statues, dragon art. I’ve been called a dragon by x’es who shall remain nameless. Like an award show, the list is much too long. I will admit to some dragonic traits.

Which calls to thought the concept that even the villain is the hero of his own story. Dragon Guardian isn’t without a heinous villain. This bad guy first made his appearance in “Dar’kind Promises” when he abducted Maura. That segment in time overlaps the action in “Dragon Guardian” (TBR May, 2014)

What do you think of this baddie?

Draft Excerpt.

Damn, for something so soft and thin, this hide was resilient. By appearance, the skin should part like hot butter. The harsh hacking sound of the skin ripping echoed through the cavernous room. The hide fought the knife like reinforced Kevlar. Maybe  the blade was too dull. He had to remove a large enough piece to discover the hidden secrets. The smaller pieces so far hadn’t revealed their magic.

Working always helped him think to sharpen the analytical edge of his scientific mind. He concentrated on his task as the icor and blood coated his gloved hands, pouring from the shallow slicing wounds to channel down the sides of the great beast and puddle on the floor. The monstrous creature’s body remained stretched and pinned by low frequency sound-waves interlaced with a heavy base throb. The right frequency pitch incapacitated the brute, a quite effective restraint with the help of pig iron chain, when experiments required direct hands-on contact. The wretched creature moaned between screams of rage and pain while he worked at peeling a bath sheet-sized swath of skin from the large dragon’s body.

There Be Dragons Here – Appreciate A Dragon Day Celebration

Dragons are opinionated, bossy and uncooperative. As a rule they tend toward the crafty and manipulative spectrum of personality traits. They are never wrong and seldom ask for directions.

Ethan and Caleb have no idea what they are in for when they meet Cathwren. She is quite unexpected and puts their well ordered, albeit if unsatisfactory, life in a blender.

Excerpt draft:

Caleb stood at the door and jiggled the handle he already knew was locked. The shock of the morning’s events had taken their toll. His thoughts were Swiss cheese “It’s locked.”

Ethan’s mental tone didn’t communicate any of his outward calm. Genius, of course it’s still locked. The keys probably went flying when she fell.

Caleb turned to take her from Ethan arms and free him to jimmy the lock. Ethan, you’ll have to break in.

“Don’t you dare break my doors.” They both froze at her command. Of course, she could still hear their mental dialogue. The emotional claiming was so fresh, that psychic pathway remained wide open between them. She might not even realize she was privy to their thoughts and heard it as if spoken aloud.

I searched months for those doors, carted them all the way back from Orlando, refinished them myself. Might as well rip my heart out and stomp it into the pavement. How dare you consider breaking my doors down… you big…big oafs?

Caleb flooded by  her memory of the countless hours she’d spent searching for the double doors that would provide the entrance to her world, Salynne’s. Additional untold hours spent stripping and refinishing the doors to their former beauty. Her joy in the treasure was immeasurable.

“I have the key.” She opened her right hand, revealing the keys and various deep cuts they’d made across her palm from gripping them during the fall.

Ethan narrowed his gaze staring at the places where the keys sliced into her skin gouging through the flesh of her hand. Caleb concentrated on tempering his brother’s energy as he vibrated with helpless anger.

Ethan’s eyes bored into his, sparks of fury igniting their brown depths. He growled. “I promise you, Caleb, if it’s within my power, the person who hurt our mate is going to suffer.”

Dragons, Dragons, Dragons. It’s National Appreciate A Dragon Day

Because humans are crunchy and good to eat.

Ever wonder about those pesky dragons of the middle ages? Where did they come from?

Well of course they were shape shifters from the other side of the veil. Yes, intelligent dragons shifters from Wyrmarach over here on holiday so to speak. It didn’t end well.

There are still dragons among us. They’re doing a better job of remaining an invisible subculture. It wouldn’t do to have a dragon the size of a bus pop out in the air over Chicago now would it?

Ethan and Caleb are Enforcers sent here to make sure their kind stay hidden from humans.

Drakins of Wyrmarach

vol 1 Dragon Guardian (TBR May 3, 2014)

Draft exerpt:

Caleb Monroe shook the antique doors of Salynne’s Crystals & Thyme, a new age curiosities and notions shop. The business hours proclaimed in bold black letters that the store should have opened half an hour ago. The sign made a metallic ping against the windowed double frame as Caleb rattled the knob again. The sharp sound echoed a counterpoint to the psychic vibration, which annoyed him since dawn. The heavy walnut door wobbled but didn’t budge.

Caleb turned to his brother. “Ethan, any special reason we’re at a new age trinket shop.”

“Would you go for early Christmas shopping.” Ethan exuded a capable calm air Caleb sometimes found reassuring, but today it pressed all his ir-ri-tate-the-crap-outa-me buttons. He’d been growling at his identical twin since daybreak.

Caleb turned on his heel and snorted. “Riigghtt.” He stalked the real estate in front of the store, brushing past planters of green growing things. The clean aroma of herbs floated up from the container gardens failed to ease his rising agitation. He paused to scan the street. An uneasy tingle of premonition radiated up the short hairs of his neck. Something wasn’t right. Something really bad was close to happening, something cataclysmic bad, something in the realm of the mother-of-all-bad.

Appreciate A Dragon Day

The Day of the Dragons. How could I resist? Especially after reading about monster erotica being the new rage. I shakes muh head.

To celebrate I’m releasing a wee snippet of my work in progress Dragon Guardian vol 1 of Drakins of Wyrmarach.

DRAFT: Back Story and Set up for the Book.

Many generations ago, a class division erupted in Drakin society resulting in the Arach human to dragon shifter clan becoming the ruling power and the Wyrm dragon to human shifter clan becoming response driven animals, muscle behind the power. The joint distinction faded through the passage of time to become WyrmArach and then Wyrmarach a bastardization pronounced Were March. The significance of the joined name is lost on the inhabitants, their history faded. The Dragon Guardian emerged as spiritual leader of the two halves, bringing the voice of the Goddess to balance the two energies in peaceful co-existence.

Their world is separated from ours by a wide gulf of difference protected by the veil. A world mired in history where nothing is allowed to change. Order reigns under the guidance of an autocratic matriarch with a very specific view of acceptable moral citizenry and a firm grasp on maintaining her power.   A bitter Queen whose mind set is so oppressive her own sons were banished as defective and an embarrassment which might threaten her rule.

Ethan and Caleb Monroe are in a word, unusual. They live among us in exile, charged with enforcing the barrier between our worlds, keeping their dimension and Drakin society hidden. The Queen dictated their exile to ensure there would not be another fiasco like the middle dark ages when dragons though they could go and come through the veil as they pleased.

A messiah is needed to usher in a new Drakin era in Wyrmarach one of understanding and tolerance. Where can salvation be found? The curtain between worlds is thinning tempting some to look to Earth Dimension for answers. Wouldn’t it be unusual if salvation rested in the hands of a somewhat ordinary human named Cathwren, who turns out to not be very ordinary at all.

Shifter’s Legacy

Rebel Ink Press – Release TBD

Rolling in at just under 20K. Paranormal Erotic Romance (Menage)

Draft Blurb

Addison Barnes has loved Nathan since the moment she looked into the deep brown eyes of the injured grey wolf brought to her rescue facility and saw a human soul. Yet, the complications of the birth of their first child, demands of mothering and keeping her wolf rescue running leaves Addison feeling less like a sexy mate and more like a saggy mom. She’s frightened of the pervading consequences of their son Logan manifesting shape shifting abilities. She longs to regain her confidence and sexual vitality and carefree demeanor. She hires drifter Duncan Black to help with some of the more physical chores at the rescue Nathan doesn’t have time to accomplish. Duncan proves to be an attractive distraction.

Duncan’s life changed forever when he’s stranded in the quaint (er…hole in the wall) north Florida town for a part for his motorcycle. The chance meeting with Addison gives him the opportunity to earn a little cash and regroup before heading on to his next destination, somewhere else. Addison and her curvy little ass are a significant distraction to his fence building chores. With his own secret to hide, he’s not prepared to be swept into a whole different world. Covertly witnessing what seems to be a wolf turning into his boss, Duncan realizes the couple might hold the key to his own mystery.

Nathan Barnes struggles to unite his pack. Key to their future is whether his human wife can help him secure the next generation of shape shifting wolves through their offspring. Or will the shifter genetics be diluted by human ones? Duncan’s presence gives a much needed buffer from all the stress. Nathan purchases an amethyst pendant from Salynne’s Crystals and Thyme as a gift of love for his beautiful wife. Sparks ignite as Nathan demonstrates to Addison the lengths he will go to for her happiness. Uncharacteristic of his Alpha possessiveness, he wants to fulfill Addison’s fantasy of a ménage with Duncan.

After weeks of handy man chores by day and lusting after Addison by night, Duncan doesn’t want to resist the offer of a weekend threesome. Planning to leave after their weekend of carnal debauchery anyway what could it matter?

With a lot of sex and a little magic, Addison begins to believe in the advantages of her womanly power. She finds joy in the love she shares with Nathan extending to Duncan. Will a one-time weekend celebration be enough for the three of them or will they insist on the promise of something more?

Baby Logan in a fit of temper makes his first shift to wolf and unwittingly sets things into motion that will bring danger to all their lives. Now Nathan, Addison and Duncan must prepare the pack against the threat of genocide for their race. Can Addison rise to the challenge and convince the pack, her husband and her lover to accept her as their best source for protection.

Shifter’s Alliance – Story to Follow: (Draft Blurb) Death comes to the small north Florida town in the form of Etienne and Julian Reynaud, two Wolf Hunters, er werewolf hunters to their friends from Louisiana. Oddly for a place sponsoring the Chinsequet Wolf Rescue there is a remarkable lack of wolves in this town. Luckily they’ve found great hunting at the local watering hole (NAME THAT BAR). Angelica (LAST NAME NEEDED) and Saffron (LAST NAME NEEDED) are hot enough to make any man howl.

Angelica and Saffron are foster sisters that learned their mysterious genetic heritage gave them the blessing/curse of wolf shape shifting. As they carry out the pack’s plan to side-line the wolf hunters will their distraction turn to love? They’re on a hunt for their lives.

Much to their surprise, she’s the lost descendent of Wyrmarach’s Dragon Guardian and rightful heir to the title. Wren came to the small North Florida town to enjoy a quiet life running her shop, Salynne’s Crystals and Thyme. Now Wren’s on the run from ancient enemies who want to kill her and the ‘Watchers’ who think she should be secluded in a Temple communing with the Goddess. Her conscience wages war with emotions urging her to climb in bed with these two very sexy dragon shifters and stay there.

The trio embarks on a hunt to uncover and eliminate the threat against Wren’s birthright. Dragon’s Unbound Promo

Dragon’s Unbound is an erotic M/M paranormal romance featuring dragon shape shifters. Rhys and Haydn made their first appearance toward then end of Dar’kind Promises a erotic F/F paranormal romance. Pieces of their story came together before I wrote Dar’kind Promises. I felt the need to go back and tell their story. So I took the pieces I had and went to work with a few more ‘what ifs’ to get the answers I needed to bring their story out. There are places to laugh, perhaps a tear or two and hopefully in the end the reminder that unconditional love exists and their is healing if you let go and work for it.

Today I share their cover and an excerpt.  Enjoy

Chapter One

Haydn concentrated on the steps to make the poultice for the healer. Prepare the white bread by tearing it into small pieces then warm the milk to douse the chunks and create a pasty mixture to treat the wounded dragon. At least he could do this job for the healer.

Isobeau rescued Haydn from hell and he would do anything she asked of him, even if it was only tearing countless loaves of bread into little pieces. His dragon symbiont had not emerged at puberty like his peers. Deemed a recessive, he was cast off and given to the Telihedran as a pleasure slave. Their draconic natures were ruthless. They’d used Haydn without compassion yet he survived the horror.

Helping others consumed his weeks with her. First, the rescue of the Dar’kind Fairy Maura and her tracker mate, Zelia, and now a very large indigo dragon shifter fighting for life in the ballroom of the old Victorian home. The healer helped all beings, not turning anyone away. For that alone she gained his loyalty without reservation. A loyalty events forced him to contemplate transferring to the new Dragon Guardian.

The Healer sent him on this task probably knowing he would be more comfortable in the confines of the kitchen. He hadn’t had the time to tell her what had happened. All the activity of the others preparing for the healing took up her time. That and the secret he hid gave him the sharp edge of panic, making it hard to breath. He kept the kitchen lights dim and focused on his chore, searching for calm balance.

He wiped his forehead with the back of his arm. He wasn’t sure what had turned his thoughts to remembering the past. The secrets he tried so hard to bury were surfacing, threatening to wreck everything. Isobeau kept his experiences before coming to the watchers in confidence. Perhaps the memories surfaced because the events of the afternoon left him with yet another secret to guard. He pulled his sleeve back down to hide the mark over his wrist.

Cathwren, the Guardian, was a human and not even reared among dragon kind. He found it hard to believe the small woman with the flaming hair stood as Dragon Guardian for this generation of their entire race. Her heritage would make her open-minded. Maybe there was a chance for others like himself. The fulfillment of prophecy transpired right before his very eyes.

Recently, his sexual desire had awakened. Now lust coursed through him leaving him achy and heavy, demanding relief. The few times he’d pleasured himself only made his need more poignant. He longed for a committed relationship, someone to be his, to love and take care of, a safe harbor. His longing had no outlet. Well, not one he would allow. Rhys deserved so much more than Haydn could offer. His interest in the man was yet another secret to hide.

The kitchen door burst open. Haydn jumped, instinctively grasping a knife for defense. Rhys stood in the doorway. The very man his wayward thoughts always drifted toward with imagined possibility of meaningful intimacy with crouched in the doorway, his hands spread in a calming gesture.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.” There’s no danger. I pushed too hard.” He turned to examine the door. “I keep meaning to plane this where the wood swells and catches.”

Often Rhys didn’t know his own strength. He was the one Watcher who didn’t give Haydn pity, only calm compassion, acceptance, and friendship. Haydn allowed the man’s projected psy energy to wash through him, restoring his calm. He put the knife down and crossed the room, moving carefully. “The healer needs this glop quickly. It’s time.”

“I have the bread cut and the milk is almost hot enough.”

Rhys moved in so close the sandalwood scent of the soap he used flooded Haydn’s senses. The man’s hair glinted black in the low light of the evening kitchen. Haydn could see the soft wisps at the V-neck of Rhys button-down shirt. Did the hair trail down the Watcher’s chest in a light dusting or did it cover him like a furry pelt? Haydn shivered. Great Goddess, help me control my thoughts.

“That’s not necessary.” Rhys lips formed one of his infrequent smiles. A smile transformed his guarded features into the handsome masculine Adonis.

“What?” Haydn struggled to think, what wasn’t necessary. He had the bread. The milk was almost ready.

“The Goddess needn’t control your thoughts, you have that power. You’re free to think and do what pleases you now. You’re welcome to wonder what my chest looks like. I’m not offended.”

Haydn’s body trembled as conflicting emotions assailed him. How could this man perceive his thoughts so easily? It was a talent usually reserved for mated couples. The feelers of inviting warmth from Rhys tickled at his awareness.

The man’s eyes were concerned. “I won’t force you. I just wanted you to know I’m here. I could be that someone for you.”

Fighting to shield his thoughts, Haydn hurried to the stove to get the warm milk, visions of their bodies entwined together making love to each other, beautiful and sharing, until they were both spent and exhausted, clouding his mind. Ugly, painful thoughts from his past intruded. He was worthless and shamed. Dear Goddess, no. He fought to breathe and push the thoughts back behind the doors of his mind. This was dangerous. Rhys could perceive his thoughts so easily.

“No. I… No.” He rejected Rhys’ offer and grabbed the pan, bringing it to pour over the bread. With all the traps in his psyche, he couldn’t bring himself to engage in meaningless, gratification-based relationships and quick, casual, nameless, sex.

Their race had never established sexual boundaries. They accepted physical desires as any other need; to eat, to scratch an itch. Sexual acts between either gender were widely practiced and weren’t limited to the constraints of human morals. However, permanent, same gender parings were unacceptable and considered an abomination.

What would it be like to have sex with tenderness? Hadyn didn’t want anonymous sex. He wanted a partner to build a healthy life with. He wanted someone who would accept him in spite of the damage to his soul. How could he say I don’t need someone, I need you? Yet, he’d just turned down the only man who didn’t treat him like a leper.

Out of the corner of his vision, he saw Rhys smile.

Rhys reached for the bowl of bread at the same time Haydn poured the hot milk over the bread cubes. Scalded milk sloshed across Rhys’ hand, searing the skin to an immediate parboiled red.

“Crap! I’m sorry.” Haydn pulled the man toward the sink where he turned on the water, dropping the empty pan with a clatter in the bottom of the stainless steel basin.

Haydn shoved Rhys’ hand under the cold water to ease the burn. The musky, sharp scent of Rhys’ male essence blanketed Haydn. In his urgency to get Rhys’ arm to the cold water, Haydn pulled the man around him. Haydn froze. It was all too intimate. Too close. Aw hell, it was also too comfortable. Rhys clasped the edge of the sink with his free hand, bracketing Haydn in his embrace.

“You’re not trapped. This is where you want to be.” Rhys’ voice caressed Haydn like a lovers touch, deep and soothing.

Lady of light, yes, the man was right. He wanted the closeness with Rhys more than he’d ever wanted anything in his life. He wanted to feel Rhys’ hard body wrapped around him. The need to have Rhys’ cock fill him became unbearable. Haydn wanted that and so much more, he couldn’t find words to describe it. The evidence of Rhys’ own need pressed against Haydn’s hip, thick and erect.

Rhys leaned his head down and whispered seductively in Haydn’s ear. “That’s yours when you’re ready to come for me.”

Haydn shivered at the double meaning. Rhy’s hot breath caressed his neck as the man paused to inhale, deeply drawing in Haydn’s scent.

“And what I have for you… I promise it won’t be quick. It won’t be casual. And it won’t be nameless.”
